Roots is a powerful meditation on identity, heritage, strength and the invisible connections that bind us to those who came before.

At the center of the composition, a serene figure rests with eyes closed, surrounded by an extraordinary explosion of organic form, saturated color and luminous gold. Her elaborate crown of tangled branches, blossoms and jewel-like passages seems to grow beyond her physical form—suggesting ancestry, memory, spirituality and generations of stories carried within us.

A Star of David emerges from the center of this abundant landscape, becoming both an anchor and a symbol of continuity. Gold leaf catches and reflects the light throughout the composition, while incorporated jewelry and richly layered acrylic create a tactile, almost sculptural surface.

Part of Sherri Ehrlich’s Growing Peace Series, Roots explores the idea that peace begins with knowing who we are, remembering where we came from and recognizing the threads that connect one generation to the next.

The figure’s closed eyes suggest an inward journey—a moment of stillness amid an exuberant world of color and movement. She is simultaneously grounded and flourishing, carrying her history while continuing to grow.

Roots has been sold and now resides in a private collection in Asheville, North Carolina.
